The most expensive carpet in the world

Rug'n'history: the rug worth more than a castle...

When we talk about luxury, we often think of jewelry, designer watches or paintings by great artists. But some less expected objects can also reach incredible prices.
This is the case of an ancient rug, the most expensive rug in the world, sold for 33.8 million dollars at an auction in New York . This rug, known as the Clark Sickle-Leaf Carpet , is now considered the most expensive in the world.
Behind this impressive sum lies a true work of art hand-woven, full of history and symbols.

An exceptional 17th century piece

the first half of the 17th century, in Persia (now Iran), in the Kerman region. At that time, this area was famous for its very high quality craftsmanship, particularly in carpet making. Kerman carpets were highly prized for their rich patterns, their fineness and their vibrant colors, often obtained through natural dyes.

This rug measures approximately 2.7 meters by 2 meters, which is relatively modest compared to other collectible rugs. What makes it truly unique is its very rare pattern: golden sickle-shaped leaves, symmetrically arranged on a deep red background, surrounded by a blue border .
This complex design, called “ sickle-leaf ” in English, is extremely rare in the world of Persian rugs. It shows great technical mastery, both in the choice of colors and in the precision of the weaving.

A history that spans centuries

The most expensive rug: a symbol of unparalleled luxury

The rug once belonged to William A. Clark, a very wealthy and influential American businessman at the end of the 19th century. He had acquired it to enrich his personal collection of oriental art, which he would eventually bequeath to the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington. The rug remained in the museum's collections for several decades before being put up for sale in 2013.

It was the prestigious auction house Sotheby's that offered it at auction. Estimated at a few million dollars, it was finally sold for 33.8 million dollars, a world record for a rug. The buyer remained anonymous, but some sources believe it was a collector or a museum from the Middle East.

Why such a price?

One might wonder what could justify such a high price for a rug, even an old one. Several elements explain this sum:

  • Rarity : there is almost no other rug with this precise pattern and in such remarkable condition. Old rugs, especially those that have been used, are often damaged, discolored or partially destroyed.
  • Historical importance: this rug dates from the golden age of Persian weaving, a period when workshops produced rugs for kings, mosques or wealthy merchants. It therefore represents a valuable cultural heritage.
  • Artistic quality : the colors, composition and fineness of the work show that it was probably a rug of great value from its creation.
  • Provenance: the fact that it belonged to an important figure like William Clark and that it was preserved in an American museum adds to its prestige.

Other high-value rugs

Even though the Clark Sickle-Leaf Carpet holds the record, other rugs have also been sold for impressive prices:

  • The Kirman vase carpet, also dated to the 17th century, was sold for $9.6 million at Christie's in London in 2010. It is known for its subtle colors and detailed floral pattern.
  • The Pearl Carpet of Baroda, a carpet entirely decorated with natural pearls, rubies and emeralds, reached a price of $5.5 million in 2009. It was commissioned in the 19th century by the Maharaja of Baroda in India, originally to decorate a mausoleum.

These examples show that ancient carpets can far exceed their function as utilitarian objects. They are also symbols of power, prestige and cultural identity, just like paintings or sculptures.
