Where do they come from? In Afghanistan, there are many ethnic groups belonging to nomadic tribes who took refuge in the country following Russian annexations: Uzbeks, Baloch, Tekke Turkmens, and Ersaris. Their Afghan carpets and kilims are often grouped under the generic name “Afghan,” even though each of these tribes produces carpets and kilims consistent with its own culture but oriented towards commercialization for the Western market.
These tribes use synthetic dyes and simplify the classic compositions of older carpets and kilims. These carpets and kilims can be found in the markets of major Afghan cities.

How are they made? Uzbek weavers are scattered throughout Uzbekistan and Afghanistan. They produce, especially in northern Afghanistan, copies of Turkmen carpets, but also very colorful felt carpets. Afghan Ersaris make a variety of carpets, either traditional ones with their own gul (from the Persian gol, meaning rose, gul refers to the floral motifs of Oriental carpets) on a rusty red background with orange-red and black forming the gul decoration, or composed of motifs borrowed from other ethnic groups using vivid, sometimes faded, synthetic dyes. The carpets of Afghan Baloch are almost identical to those of the Baloch of Persian Khorasan. The decoration found on Afghan carpets is geometric, featuring the motif called Göl, an octagonal motif in a line, with stars, which are also octagonal.

Where are they made? The two most popular Afghan carpets are made by two distinct peoples. Thus, the Khal Mohammadi is knotted by Turkmens in northern Afghanistan, and the Afghan Aqche is made by Afghans.

How to recognize a true Afghan carpet? Traditionally, Afghan carpets are distinguished by their dark tones. The main designs used on these carpets are the Göl, a motif resembling an elephant's foot, and the octagon, an 8-sided figure. Regular and delicate, these motifs are often accompanied by stylized flowers in dark blue, ochre, and beige tones. Afghan carpets are hand-knotted, and the materials used for their manufacture are sheep wool, goat hair, and in some cases, horsehair.
