Where do they come from? The production of Kashmiri rugs in India only dates back to the reigns of the Mughal emperors in the 16th and 17th centuries. The few rare examples preserved in museums offer a glimpse into their splendor and artistic quality, reminiscent of Mughal miniatures. These rugs were made by Persian artisans who settled in India under the impetus of Emperor Akbar. In the 20th century, English merchants from the East India Company set up rug factories in major cities where child labor was underpaid. Since Independence, production established by state organizations has regained quality standards and respects the cultural specificities of each region.

How are they made? Kashmiri rug weavers have a lot of imagination; they create original rugs that are often an expression of the refined folk art of ancient shawls. The soft harmony of colors, the balance of compositions, and the finesse of the pattern designs make these rugs endearing works that fit equally well into antique and contemporary decors. However, the production of copies of foreign rugs remains significant to meet the demand of the external market. How to recognize a real Kashmiri rug? Kashmiri rugs are made of silky, fine wool from the down of certain goats. The silk, meanwhile, comes from China. Persian knots are used for the creation of these rugs. The pile of Kashmiri rugs is made of a very tight and short blend of wool and silk threads. These rugs very often feature soft colors with extremely delicate ranges of tender pink, light beige, ivory, yellow, and sky blue. The finest silk rugs reproduce the characteristic designs of ancient shawls, sometimes featuring the boteh motif. Some rugs feature a central medallion amidst a scattering of flowers or motifs inspired by Buddhism and its legends, gods, and goddesses, with a sacred Sanskrit text serving as the rug's border.
