Where do they come from? The production of Kashmiri carpets in India only dates back to the reigns of the Mughal emperors in the 16th and 17th centuries. The few rare surviving examples in museums give an idea of their splendor and artistic quality, close to Mughal miniatures. These carpets were made by Persian artisans who came to settle in India at the instigation of Emperor Akbar. In the 20th century, English traders from the East India Company set up carpet factories in major cities where the labor of young children was underpaid. Since Independence, the production established by state organizations has regained quality standards and respects the cultural particularities of each region.

How are they made? Kashmiri carpet knotters have a great deal of imagination; they create original carpets that are often an expression of the refined folk art of ancient shawls. The soft harmony of colors, the balance of compositions, and the fineness of the pattern design make these carpets endearing works that integrate well into both antique and contemporary décors. However, the production of copies of foreign carpets remains significant to meet the demand of the external market. The most beautiful Kashmiri carpets come from the workshops of Srinagar, where production is abundant to meet both tourist and Western market demands.

How to recognize a true Kashmiri carpet? Kashmiri carpets are made of silky, fine wool from the down of certain goats. The silk, for its part, comes from China. A Persian knot is used for making these carpets. The pile of Kashmiri carpets is made of a very tight and very short blend of wool and silk threads. These carpets very often feature soft colors with extremely delicate ranges of soft pink, light beige, ivory, yellow, and sky blue. The finest silk carpets feature the characteristic designs of ancient shawls, sometimes with the boteh motif. Some carpets feature a central medallion amidst a scattering of flowers or motifs inspired by Buddhism and its legends, gods, and goddesses, with a sacred Sanskrit text serving as the carpet's border.
