Where do they come from?
China has had a prestigious past in the art of figured silk fabrics since the Han dynasty – around the 2nd century AD – which were disseminated for centuries along the Silk Road – both land and sea – to the West. However, its production of pile carpets remained rare and limited to the domestic market. It was only from the end of the 19th century that this craft was developed in cities by European merchants. The antique Chinese carpets that can still be found date back to the 18th and 19th centuries and can be categorized into three groups: Beijing carpets, Inner Mongolian carpets (Ningxia or Baotou), and Chinese Turkestan carpets.

What are their characteristics?
Chinese carpets differ greatly from other Oriental carpets in their designs, which have symbolic and religious meanings, and in their extremely delicate colors.
