Where do Kashan carpets come from?
The city of Kashan (or Kachan), with its harsh climate, is located 190 km from Tehran in Iran, in the center of the Iranian plateau between Qom and Isfahan, on the edge of the Dasht-e Kavir desert. Mulberry trees were cultivated there, producing renowned silk. The ancient silk carpets produced by Shah Abbas's royal manufactory, in conjunction with that of Tabriz, were rich in composition.

How are they made?
In the very fine weaving, predominantly red and blue, soft, silky wool was mixed with gold and silver threads. The exceptional quality of this production has declined since the use of synthetic dyes, but the artistic reputation of the carpets produced in this city remains very much alive. Very fine pure silk carpets are made there with patterns in soft and delicate colors inlaid on a garnet red background.

How to recognize a true Kashan carpet?
Some carpets, knotted in silk, create a relief effect that stands out against the kilim background of the carpet: these carpets are called Suf. The most precious pieces, in silk or pure sheep's wool, are highly priced but justifiably so, whereas a poor-quality Aroun-Kachan produced in a small village near Kachan is worth barely half.

What are their motifs?
Some workshops copy carpets with hunting scenes or other figural subjects inspired by Persian mythology or birds in a vegetal setting, trees of life, inspired by ancient Persian miniatures.
