What is the history of Naïn carpets? Naïn, a small town 150 km from Isfahan in Iran, is traditionally said to have been founded by Naen, one of Noah's sons. This town, with fewer than 50,000 inhabitants, is renowned worldwide for the elegance of its carpets. Carpet weaving began there in 1930. First-quality production was never abundant: in 1940, there were only 150 active looms. In past centuries, Naïn's main production consisted of weaving precious fabrics, often silk, for the adornments of mullahs. Around 1920, textile factories suffered a crisis due to Western competition. Many were forced to cease their activity, and most of the workforce turned to producing carpets decorated with classic Persian motifs.

How are they made? Naïn carpets have classic rectangular formats and their knot is asymmetrical. The structure of Naïns is made of cotton, more rarely silk. This material is almost always used to highlight the contours of the design. This technique, called gharty, is the main characteristic of Naïns, whose flowers are outlined by brilliant contours that give them relief.

How to recognize a genuine Naïn carpet? The most commonly used colors are chosen from rather cool tones: blue, hazelnut, or cream; the silk is generally white, and the designs are traditional. Occasionally, full-field floral motifs or hunting scenes are used. Thanks to the skill and expertise of weavers acquired in making extremely fine fabrics, Naïn carpets are considered the most finely knotted in all of Iran.
