Where do they come from? The city of Kayseri, located 336 km from Konya in Turkey, was an important commercial center for carpets during the Ottoman Empire. Today, it has reasserted its position by becoming the main commercial hub for carpets manufactured in all provinces of central Anatolia, including Cappadocia carpets, Kirsehir carpets, as well as those brought to the bazaar by the Yuruks and Kurds residing in the east of this region.

How are Kayseri carpets made? In the city's factories, many carpets with a wide variety of rather heterogeneous designs are woven, intended exclusively for export or the tourist trade. Private workshops work for wholesalers who provide them with raw materials and the designs of the ordered carpets. These merchants have a whole network of home knotters established in the surrounding villages, with every house having its own loom ready to operate. Here, too, production is based on Western orders and desired selling prices. The designs and dimensions of these carpets are decided by the importers.

What are their characteristics? The local wool used produces a rough, short, and rather close-cropped pile. The designs imitate either Konya designs or Persian designs, particularly inspired by Tabriz carpets. Kayseri has indeed always maintained commercial and cultural contacts with the capital of Iranian carpets. Conversely, silk carpets inspired by Kayseri models are made in Tabriz.
