Where do they come from?
The Kazak rug is the most renowned and appreciated type of Caucasian rug. However, it should be noted that this is a commercial designation that does not necessarily indicate the place of origin of these pieces: they are not believed to originate solely from the city of Kazak in Afghanistan, but rather from a broader area with ill-defined borders in southwestern Caucasus, as this name of uncertain origin more generally describes a stylistic and structural grouping.
What are the characteristics of Kazak rugs?
The large dimensions of the main motifs, which are few in number but dominate the more abundant secondary ornaments—which are always spaced out and never very small—are typical of Kazak rugs. The bold, bright colors are also characteristic of these rugs.
What are their usual patterns?
The geometric shapes most commonly used in the decoration of Kazak rugs are octagons, hexagons, lozenges, swastikas, eight-pointed stars, and rectangles. The main medallions are also adorned in their center with a curious butterfly motif.
How can you recognize a genuine Kazak rug?
The colors are rare and always contrasting, predominantly light and dark red, intense blue, white, and green. Kazak rugs can be dated from the mid-19th to the early 20th century.
All our Kazak rugs are unique pieces, sold with their certificate of origin.
