Where do Ziegler rugs come from?
Ziegler rugs (also known as Chobie) originate from Afghanistan and Pakistan. This category of rug emerged at the end of the 19th century when the Ziegler Company, a German-based company operating in Manchester, UK, began producing these rugs in the Sultanabad region (now known as Arak) in Iran. Ziegler's initial goal was to produce Oriental rugs specially designed to meet the tastes and requirements of the Western market.
They adapted traditional Persian designs, simplifying them and modifying the color palettes to appeal to European and American preferences. This led to the creation of less busy patterns and the use of natural dyes to achieve softer tones, thus distinguishing them from more elaborate and vibrant traditional Persian rugs.
How are they made?
Ziegler rugs are made using a rigorous and traditional artisanal process. Production begins with the selection of the best yarns, generally high-quality wool, and sometimes blended with silk for added finesse and luster. The yarns are dyed with natural or sometimes chemical dyes, depending on the desired style and color palette.
The trend is toward soft, natural tones, in keeping with the Ziegler aesthetic. The designs are created before weaving begins. The rugs are handwoven, often on horizontal or vertical looms. This stage is very labor-intensive and can take several months or even years, depending on the size and complexity of the rug. Each knot is tied by hand, a process that gives the rug its density and durability.
What are their characteristics?
Ziegler rugs, prized for their elegance and quality, possess several distinctive characteristics. Ziegler rugs are known for their simplified patterns, which are a modern adaptation of traditional Persian motifs. They feature floral and geometric patterns, often in a more understated and refined style, perfectly suited to contemporary interiors. Ziegler rugs feature subtle, natural tones. These palettes can include earthy tones, pastels, and neutral shades, creating a sophisticated and versatile appearance. These rugs are generally made from high-quality wool, sometimes blended with silk for a more luxurious look. This combination ensures durability and comfort underfoot.
How can you recognize a genuine Ziegler rug?
Genuine Ziegler rugs are distinguished by their clean patterns and floral or geometric designs. These rugs feature soft, natural tones, often in neutral or pastel color ranges. Zieglers favor a subtle and soothing aesthetic. A genuine Ziegler rug will be handwoven, which is noticeable in the regularity of the knotting and the finesse of the details. The weave is dense and uniform, offering a rich texture and a pleasant feel.
They are typically made from high-quality wool, sometimes blended with silk. The wool should be soft and lustrous, indicating good fiber and dyeing quality. The edges and finishes of a genuine Ziegler rug are neat and precise. The selvedge should be clean and even, without loose or frayed threads. When the rug is turned over, the back should reveal consistent and uniform handwork. The knots and weft should be regular and compact.
All our Ziegler rugs are unique pieces, sold with their certificate of origin.
